Gmail Checker version 2.1.1, which fixes the recent login problem, has been available for a while but I forgot to announce it :) Many thanks to everyone for the debugging reports. You can get it here or on addons.mozilla.org.

  3. The login issues maybe fixed for single accounts. Using a mixture of normal gmail accounts and hosted accounts doesn't seem to work properly. The plugin itself logs in to all accounts and reports all changes. But I'm having the problem that working on the gmail site is only possible with one account at a time. Maybe some cookie issues...

Before the login problems occured some weeks ago, working with multiple and/or mixed accounts wasn't a problem. Also it's still no problem with gmail manager. But I'd rather like to see this fixed in my fav gmail checker ;)

  4. Since version 2.1, I've modified the code so that only one account can be opened at a time.
Mixing cookies of different accounts isn't really a good idea. That's why that 'feature' is gone.

  5. Hi,
I just installed version 2.1.1 and I found out the Spanish (Spain) translation was finally included. Thank you. I'll keep maintaining it for as long as I can.

  6. hi,

thank you very much for this extension, it is really helpful :)

One suggestion: often when I have zero ("0") emails, the zero is in bold and I get confused that I have some email. I think from a user interface design principles it is better not to make elements more appearing to the eye, if they are not that important. Bold text catches our perception in this case, when we are not actually interested that we have 0 emails. But if we had 1/2 or more, then bold would be really helpful, because we will see in an instant that something had happened. :)

    Thank you,
    nikolay

  10. Updated to 2.1.1 and will not login. Removed history, cleaned machine, tried logging in while on Gmail page, tried all the tricks. Will not login at all. I use this program soooooo much. Help.

  13. Could you please update version 1.3 with the login fix? I still use it because I don't want the cookies to be swapped.
    Thanks
by Steven on Tuesday, 24 November 2009, 02:54 am #
  14. Version 1.3 is obsolete, I'm afraid.
To fix the login issue, you should log in from the main Gmail page, i.e. gmail.com (for @gmail.com) and mail.google.com/a/domain (for @domain). The extension will work after that.
You can also download 1.3.1.1 which is the same as 1.3.1 but has maxVersion of Firefox bumped for later releases.

  15. Worked well after complete uninstall and install. Now, it will not login at all. I get login failure every try. Is there anything you can do? Can you add a clear cookie button to help clean out the cache? Thanks

  20. The script works fine with PHP5. Just follow this FAQ. Extract the calendar script somewhere on your web server and load the index.php page to check the document root.

  22. If you are using Firefox version 2.0 through 3.7 the little envelope will appear on the very bottom right of your window/browser. You have to restart Firefox for it to show up though. Let me know if you need anymore help! :)

I LOVE this add on BTW, thanks!!!

  23. Hi there,

Love this add-on couldn't do without it!

My name is Joe Magnotti of TryBPO.com, the operators of TwitArt.com. I would like to offer you a free Twitter background as a contribution for this fine add-on. If interested just email me and I will send you a coupon code.

  24. I can access GMAIL with GMAIL checker active.
When I signoff it hangs. I have to logoff gmail checker as well. If I close the window and attempt to restart, GMAIL logs me automatically onto the account that I was trying to signoff from so that I could get to the other account !
Think this started with Firefox 3.5.6
by Hank on Tuesday, 22 December 2009, 10:17 pm #
  25. Do you mean that the browser froze when you tried to log out from the Gmail web page? If so then it has something to do with your machine and isn't related to the extension.
If the browser froze when you used the extension to log out then see the FAQ on how to get the debug log. I doubt this is the case though.
Firefox can restore the last browsing session when it crashes so it's normal that you're automatically logged onto your account.

  26. I love this plug in. However, my alma mater, Virginia Tech, changed all alumni accounts to a Gmail account. I would love to be able to use your checker for this account, but it will not recognize my email lmason@vt.edu as a Gmail account. Is there a way around this?

    Thanks!
by Lisa on Friday, 8 January 2010, 04:25 pm #
  27. Your university uses their own authentication system, not the standard Gmail login mechanism, so there's nothing I can do about it I'm afraid.
by NT on Friday, 8 January 2010, 05:23 pm #
  28. Thanks anyway! Love it!
by Lisa on Friday, 8 January 2010, 05:35 pm #
  29. Great extension, the only problem is I have to click 3 times and wait several seconds to open my gmail account, which is too much trouble for such a frequently used function. I wish there is a option to set the effect of left click status bar icon as open the default(first) gmail account, and the menu can be accessed with right click.
by draco on Tuesday, 12 January 2010, 02:47 pm #
  30. Another problem is, I used to keep my laptop logged in google accounts, so I don't have to input my id and passwords every time I open google reader. But now I have to input them every day with gmail checker. I don't have this problem when I was using gmail notifier before. I think maybe something gmail checker did signed me out even I chose to stay signed in.
by draco on Tuesday, 12 January 2010, 07:57 pm #
  31. It's possible to have an option to open gmail.com of the first account in the account manager by clicking on the statusbar icon. I need to implement a way to rearrange the accounts though. Anyway, this feature will be available in the next release.

Since version 2.1, the extension always deletes cookies of the logged in account before opening an account in the browser. This is to avoid cookies of different accounts from conflicting each other. I may implement an option in the new version to have a @gmail.com (or @googlemail.com) account and a hosted domain logged in at the same time. Multiple @gmail.com or multiple hosted domains aren't possible unfortunately.

  32. Thanks! It's great to know they will be addressed later:)

  33. I'd like an option to check all labels except junk. Is that possible?
by JimW on Friday, 22 January 2010, 02:34 pm #
  34. The extension checks for new mail in all labels by default unless you've chosen to check in inbox only.
The spam folder is never checked regardless of what the option is.
by NT on Friday, 22 January 2010, 03:53 pm #
  35. Every day or two, I am randomly asked for one of my gmail passwords by Gmail Checker, i.e. it seems to be randomly losing passwords.

Is there something I am doing wrong?
by Taxee on Wednesday, 27 January 2010, 02:16 pm #
  36. Is the account saved in the account manager or is it the one you've selected 'Remember login session' in the login window? If it's the latter, the cookies have basically expired. The expiry time is set by Gmail and could be a bit random sometimes.
by NT on Wednesday, 27 January 2010, 05:14 pm #
  37. I was selecting 'Remember login session' in the login window. However, I stopped selecting this several days ago. Today Gmail Checker lost all of my passwords (I had to reenter all of them). This happened immediately after I installed a new addon.
by Taxee on Friday, 29 January 2010, 04:08 pm #
  38. Because the cookies have expired. This option uses only cookies for authentication and the password wasn't saved locally.
by NT on Friday, 29 January 2010, 09:06 pm #
  39. I get new mail notifications for mail that is NOT in my INBOX. I tracked it down to a thread in my AllMail. Must have just archived without reading. So unfortunately every time this happens I have to traipse through AllMail and set my read marks OFF.
by Hank on Monday, 15 February 2010, 10:23 pm #
  40. The extension sees mail in inbox and labels as different ones so that mail must have been labelled.
You can actually mark the mail as read from the popup menu by right-clicking on the mail title.
by NT on Tuesday, 16 February 2010, 01:46 pm #
  41. Thanks for a Gmail checker add-on that, for me, works well (with 3 accounts). A request though - some much more convenient way to activate "Check mail now." Such as: right-click the button. As it is now, hunting for a menu entry is all there is. Even just moving the "Check mail now" entry to the top of its list would help, or how about making it red text or - better - highlighted with a bright background?
by emarell on Friday, 19 February 2010, 07:45 pm #
  42. Regarding "Check mail now" - above, I was referring to the toolbar button for Gmail Checker. Because I dislike statusbar clutter, that available icon had been turned off and forgotten. So I did not notice the option to *LEFT*-click the statusbar icon to check all mail.

Now I turned Gmail Checker's statusbar icon on - maybe it's worth the extra bit of clutter and will be good enough. But honestly, I much prefer the toolbar button, because its message count is at the top of my screen. Maybe for the next version it still would be a good idea to alter the toolbar button a little as requested above.
by emarell on Saturday, 20 February 2010, 01:23 am #
  43. The extension is an *automatic* mail checker which means it automatically checks mail without you having to do it manually. Set the checking interval shorter if you want to but Google may not be very happy to have their server polled too frequently.
by NT on Sunday, 21 February 2010, 09:16 pm #
  44. Yes, but I didn't ask for the automatic check interval to be shorter. I asked for the already-existing context menu entry, "Check mail now" to be made easier to see (with a color or by moving it).
by emarell on Thursday, 25 February 2010, 06:46 pm #
  45. Please, add different color icons for "new mail" and "no mail" in statusbar, as it's done in Gmail Manager etc.
    We need color code!

  46. Gmail Checker's popups appear every time it checks for email, and they all appear over each other. [Firefox 3.6]
by Linchpin on Saturday, 27 February 2010, 05:54 pm #
  47. Axl: different status icons will be available in the next release.

Linchpin: it's a limitation of Firefox. Ideally, the popups would be stacked vertically but Firefox doesn't support this.

  48. I really like the Gmail Checker.

    It is simplistic and elegant.

    Great work, thank you.

  51. This is the best add-on, awesome work.

Any chance you could a "Mark All As Read" option in between the "Open" and "Log Out" options for each account??
by Des on Thursday, 18 March 2010, 06:02 pm #
  52. Sure. But I'll probably add that option in the same context menu as other actions when you right-click on the email.
by NT on Friday, 19 March 2010, 10:38 am #
  53. Hi. I have a rather unstable wireless signal and every time it cuts out, gmail checker pops up the same error message several times (it seems to be 2-3 times per email address its trying to check) saying that the security certificate is invalid probably to do with the session being changed by re-establishing connection with the router. maybe when you get time you could add some code to deal with lost and reestablished connections?
by Ivan on Sunday, 4 April 2010, 11:31 pm #
  54. The error you've seen is notified by Firefox, not the extension so I've got no control over it.
by NT on Tuesday, 6 April 2010, 01:08 pm #
  55. I confirm the mail fetchter for other accounts does not seem to work at all since one month may be more.
NT, I send you my log.

  57. @Lizm and anyone having a problem with mail fetcher, I've found the problem. It was indeed caused by a change in Gmail's page. I'll release a new version with the fix in a few days.

  59. Last year, in my rookie-ness I just couldn't get the news script to work in my CMS based projects. However, I did introduce folks to it, particularly to some sites that list useful scripts.

Anyway, today I decided to give it a try again and Kaboom! I got it to work for me. What a difference a year makes. My question is:
Is there a way to display a current list of article titles and a current list of comments?

    Thanks.

  62. Don't like this about newest version, 2.2: clicking the statusbar icon opens up a menu instead of checking the mail like before. It's an unwanted extra step. Can we have a UI option to make it work like the last version?
