Gmail Checker FAQ

Friday, 14 January 2011

Any problem, see FAQ.

Update: 21/1

For anyone having the toolbar icon problem

  • try version 2.5.0.1 to see if it fixes the problem
  • if version 2.5.0.1 doesn't fix the problem, try version 2.5.0.2
  • if both don't work. It might be that your localstore.rdf file is corrupt. Try deleting it and then try version 2.5 again.

Just to make sure, are you using the English locale or any other?

  1. Hi, I have problem with latest beta 9 and GM checker. When I place icon in navigation bar (in fact even if only addon bar is closed), the navigation bar lost its layout (icons position and icons selection) when I restart the browser.
If GM checker icon is placed in addon bar or GM checker is disabled completely, everythink is ok.
    Version 2.5, FF4 beta 9 (beta 8 was fine)

  2. I've got no idea. There's no problem on my end. Unless there are more reports from other people, it could be your installed Firefox was corrupt.

  3. Well, its fresh new installation and new clean profile...
Done few tests. The bug doesn't appear while no gmail account is set in GM checker! While I set one account, the nav bar doesn't save its position and it is set to default while I restart browser. It's clearly connected to GM checker, when I disable it - everything is ok

  4. I have the same problem as Nabla. I am using ff4 beta 9 also. My toolbar buttons get reset if I have Gmail icon in toolbar. If I only have it in status bar it is fine

  5. Hi, I like Gmail Checker a lot but have a couple of suggestions for improvements:
*The light green icon for when you have unread mail is a little bit...well, light. I think it should stand out more.
*When I right click and select 'Open Mailbox', it would be great if that would open in a new tab.

That's all. Keep up the good work!

  6. Nabla, Bud: a screenshot would be helpful.

Mike: middle-click or Ctrl+click will open in a new tab.

  7. Same bug as Nable and Bud, using Fx 4.0 beta 9. With GC enabled, toolbar gets reset to default layout. No customization possible. Disabling the GC extension solves the problem.
Previous betas didn't have the bug.

  8. There's a problem: if somebody replies to me, "gmail checker 2.4.2" doesn't notify me new email. I have Firefox version 3.6.13
by Belindo on Wednesday, 19 January 2011, 04:19 pm #
  9. NT, sorry there is nothing to show on screenshot. Just navigation bar after browser restart lost customization (icon positions, icons of other addons etc.) when GM checker is installed and setup.
Beside GM checker i have NoScript and AdBlock addon. Nothing more. Thanks.

  10. V2.5 with FF 4.0b9 working perfectly here in Win7 (I have multiple add-ons including Noscript and Adblocker).
With multiple Gmail accounts (I have over 25) it would really help to see which one has the new posts if they were emboldened - like with the email headers (and icon) in the subsidiary window.
Also the one and only thing I miss from Gmail Manager was the ability to apply different new mail sounds to diiferent accounts - so I knew when there was new mail on the more important accounts. But that's the only thing :-)
    Great add-on - many thanks.

  11. Chis, please, try to place GM checker icon to navigation bar and change the position of some icons in navigation bar, then restart browser to see if navigation bar saves its layout or if it will reset to default layout.
I have this problem on two machines, win7 64, FF4b9 fresh installation, new clean profile.
    Thanks

  12. I don't normally have the icons in the Navigation Bar (I prefer the add-on bar at the bottom) but I experimented just for you. ;-) And the layout didn't change when I restarted. Seems OK here.
by chris on Thursday, 20 January 2011, 10:08 am #
  13. Chris, thanks for help. Just for sure - did you try to change position of some icon in nav bar or did you try to remove some object from nav bar before browser restart? And after restart - your changes was there or was lost? Thanks for cooperation :-)
by Nabla on Thursday, 20 January 2011, 10:23 am #
  14. I added three icons, restarted. Shuffled them to new positions and restarted. Then reshuffled them again and restarted. On each restart they were in the positions that I had put them - so the changes were kept and correct.

  15. LOVE GMC, but it's gone all wonky since I "upgraded" my google-apps domain account to the new 2011 whatever-it-is. Did the API change?

It will check mail once (I think), but the second check attempt fails and I have to enter the password again. Perhaps it's not working at all since the first check always says 0 new.

    I've tried the full logout/re-auth.

I still have the same bug with the new version 2.5. When I want to open my mailbox in Firefox, my password is asked and when I tip it the mailbox doesn't open. I have to click "connect with another user" and tip mail email address + my password to see my mails.

So there are still the same bugs... :(

  21. Hi NT,

like your AddOn a lot for years. But since 2.4 the changed icon is... hmmm... a bit ugly (the red one looks a little dirty and the green color doesn't fit the Gmail design). Is it possible to send you another suggestion? Mabe the icon from the official Gmail extension in Google Chrome!?

    Best regards!

  24. Hi, being already at version 2.5 you might have talked about this already, but the one thing I miss from my previous gmail addon is:
When I click the icon so a tab opens with my mailbox, reset the icon to 0 mails, and reset the time until the next mail check, so it doesn't check while I'm still reading mails. :)
    Otherwise a very good addon!

  25. Now I created my own xpi file for a test with a new icon. One example of the result:

But it's always a matter of taste. :-)

  26. I am patiently waiting for a version working on Firefox 3.6.x on Mac OS X 10.6.x
With 2.5.0.2 i still have the problem that the login doesn't work.
I am prompted for the password and it is not accepted.
So i cannot use it at all.
Is it best just to uninstall it on Mac or will it be working once?

On PC all is fine and nice.

  36. Hi, when looking at the msgs, I can mark them as read, archive, etc with a right click.

However, the "apply to all" checkbox is at the top, and on my linux system, the checkbox is really sensitive. I always have to be very careful not to do something to all msgs by accident.

Would it be possible to move "apply to all" to the end of the menu, please? Thank you very much.
by TTran on Thursday, 10 February 2011, 09:44 am #
  37. No please don't because it is handy to have it on the top, you need less mousehandling like this. On the way to "Mark as read" you can quickly check "Apply to all".
Very much more necessary it would be to fix the Add-On for Mac 10.6, where it is still not working!

  43. Hi,

This is a more technical question, but I notice when I start Firefox with auto-login, my hard drive does a lot of spinning. I believe this may be due to sqlite since I have seen this in my own application and others when the "synchronous" pragma level is full/normal and no transactions are used. Is there any way you can add transactions (if this is the case) to prevent the excessive hard drive usage?

    Thanks.

  49. Hi. Great add-on - well done and thanks.

Unfortunately mine doesn't seem to work correctly in one way - the icon never turns red for new mail. All it ever does is keep incrementing the number of emails in my Inbox beside the green envelope, with no other changes at all.

  50. That's the correct behaviour. The green icon means there's new mail. The red icon means there's no mail.

  51. Hi - ah, ok thanks.

I think I've fixed things by ticking the "do not check for new mail in labels" option. That was why I wasn't getting the behaviour I expected.

  55. There is still a bug in the add-on for Mac OS X 10.6.7:
In windows I have a right click option in the list of mails. This is missing in the Mac add-on, but it is very useful because of: "Apply to all" and "Mark as read". There is no way to mark a mail as read in Mac.

  57. Nice trick, but it how to avoid that the click opens gmail.com?
When I click and move the mouse, as soon as I release the click, gmail.com opens and all my contextmenu is in vain.
    Am I too clumsy?

  59. I guess you have no MacBook.
It is not possible this way.
Not with the Trackpad, not with an external mouse.
If I move the mouse (still holding down the mousebutton) and hold over the "Apply to all", it won't mark or activate anything. When I release the mousebutton the list with mails and the contextmenu just disappears.
    Nothing happened.
    Did you test it somewhere?
by franc on Thursday, 9 June 2011, 05:54 pm #
  60. By the way, why do you think it is a Firefox Bug?
by franc on Thursday, 9 June 2011, 05:59 pm #
  61. Does it work with other options, like 'mark as read', etc.?

I've tested on an OS X Tiger virtual machine and it works fine. Either the virtual machine behaves differently or OS X has changed since regarding mouse events. I haven't got enough time at the moment to do more debugging.

It's a Firefox's bug because this is just a standard context menu which works fine on other operating systems except OS X.
by NT on Friday, 10 June 2011, 06:52 pm #
  62. OK, now I have it, I had to use the Arrow Down key and the Return key:

Pressing LeftMouseButton (holding it all the time) / Move Mouse to the right / Arrow down to 'Apply to all' / Return / Arrow down to 'Mark as read' / Return (and the Context menu dissapears and all are marked as read)

and all mails are marked as read. Ouff, tricky.
    Thanks.
