2-step verification

Wednesday, 2 March 2011

Gmail Checker version 2.5.0.90 which supports 2-step verification is now available. You can get it here (51 KB).

Important: The extension does not work with application-specific passwords. You must use your normal password and then enter the SMS verification code when prompted.

A few people aren't happy with the icons which I found quite okay. Just for experiment, this release uses icons created by RoksVempire. Feel free to send me your own icons if you think that they are better.

Note: The icons must be in both 24x24 and 16x16 size.

Update 6/4:

The fix for 2-step verification doesn't work any more. Google has changed the way Gmail Atom feeds are authenticated. I'm working on the solution.

  1. Bug report: Every new browser window opened leads to another instance of Gmail Checker running, multiplying the number of notifications within the defined interval. "Notify the same new message only once" does fix this, but this is not an option as I do want to keep the periodical reminder alive.

  2. Please get the old icons back, the new ones are much worse.

  3. In Firefox 4, the toolbar button looks out of place because the right half of the button is missing a border. Could you change this if possible? Thanks.

  4. 2-step doesn't work. Asks for the sms, I'm sure I enter it right but the window pops up again and again. Then I try to cancel and start over but the sms never arrives anymore. I hope you can reproduce it with a test account, there's just too much text in the debug window for me to look for my login and pass...

  5. Hi! Great extension, the best gmail checker.

I also like more the old icons. But maybe a more firefox-like standard button would be better. I can help you on that, but I don't know the format to create standard firefox button images.

I have a similar problem than Shield.
Each new window, that includes any site popup, starts mail verification (that's something you added on v2.2, I think), but marking to not repeat message notification doesn't work well at all, as it always repeats the first unread message of the first gmail account.
So now, every time I open a new window, I see the same mail notification popup. I can confirm that this also happens on v 2.5.0.2.

Another problem is that, if you tell firefox to restore last window state, and you had 2 or more windows open, and you set a master password for firefox (this is a must, if you use a portable computer), then you will have to enter the master password 2 or more times, also very annoying.

Good work anyway! Keep it up!

I have sent you several sets of icons... several times. Haven't received any answer from you. You could have had at least the politeness of acknowledging reception.

  8. I'd like the option of having the icon somewhere other than the status bar, because otherwise I don't need the status bar showing and taking up screen space.

  10. Hi. I have 2 suggestion which may be helpful for the Gmail checker add-on.
Firstly, I want to check the inbox only, not in 'all mail' box.
Secondly, I want to open the new tab in background.

  13. Can you fix text position in popup? In FF4 it looks strange - text is line overlapped.

  14. First of all: thank you for this add on! It's my favourite gmail addon for firefox. However, for the first time in more than a year I am experiencing a problem: I have the latest version (2.5.0.2) and when opening Firefox 4 this morning, I saw it had only retained one of my 4 Gmail adresses. When I click Manage accounts, the screen appears very shortly, and then goes away. Of course I have uninstalled and installed it again, but the same things happens. What can I do? The debugging screen shows nothing. Is there somewhere a file or something that I can delete?
by Linda on Wednesday, 6 April 2011, 11:39 am #
  15. I see that I did not have the latest version, but I also installed 2.5.0.9 and it was still happening :( I ended up deleting gmailchecker.sqlite and the Manage Accounts screen did not disappear anymore. Why this happened is still a mystery...
by Linda on Wednesday, 6 April 2011, 12:00 pm #
  16. Shield, this will be fixed in the next release.

Juan, this is a bit difficult to fix because the toolbar icon has a label in the middle to show the mail count as well. This is why the button is split into two.

Cristian Alvarez, I'll look into the master password problem but I can't guarantee it is solvable.

Ryan, audio notification only works with PCM WAV files. MPEG and possibly other encoded WAV files don't work. This is a limitation of Firefox.

Alexander, there are no problems on my end. Have you got a screenshot?

Amaltea, Linda and others who have a problem with accounts not showing in 'Manage Accounts' window:
Deleting gmailchecker.sqlite should return the extension to the original state. If you can change the Settings, this means that there are no problem with the extension or the database. But if 'Manage Accounts' still doesn't work, your Firefox profile's encryption key is probably corrupted. There's nothing I can do about this. You need to search how to fix this problem.

  17. Thanks for creating the most useful Gmail Checker of all Gmail/email checkers I've tried. The "Apply to all" is greate, but I need "Apply to some", so I can selectively archive (or mark as READ) some messages then use "Apply to all" to delete the rest. Currently it's all or one at a time, then the window disappears and I'd have to repeat the process for additional 'archive' or 'mark as read'

  19. When I choose option "Show messages in main menu ...", which sounds really good, the emails should be sorted in the other way, please.
PS: Thanks for this useful addon.

  20. Gmail Checker is a huge help. I've used it every day many time a day for a while now. Thanks! You may have answered this already but...

Thinh- First off thanks - Is there anyway to have Gmail Checker act as the default (outbound) email client? For instance you click on an email link on a website or other app- could Gmail Checker offer which Gmail account to use and then populate the email address into the to field. Just hoping... Thanks again for such a great tool!

  23. i have multiple mailboxes at my own domain hosted by gmail. i also have several regular gmail accounts, and google voice tied to one of them.

google recently completed an infrastructure transition, and now i cant have both a gmail inbox and a mydomain.com (hosted at gmail) inbox open at the same time. unless i activate the multiple sign-in feature, which i did. now if i try to switch mydomain.com mailboxes with Gmail Checker, it signs out of the current one but errors before signing in to the new one, something about a circular path that will never finish. the original account GM signed out of is now the only one that won't error, so i have to go back and click "sign out of all accounts" and re-login to all of them 1 at a time.

with multiple sign-ins normally, tho, switching accounts is easy, pick it off a list, but the list doesnt tell me if the mailboxes have any mail. so i use Gmail Checker for that, but have to remember not to use it to switch accounts.

  26. This extension has stopped working for me in the latest Firefox nightly builds. I enter my username and password and a dialog pops up saying login failed.

Tried on two different PCs with the latest nightly builds.

  27. been using this for over a 1 year with no problems on 15 gmail accounts......5 days ago 4 of My Gmail accounts would not login (Failed to access)?
I deleted all of the 15 email accounts and entered only 1 email account (of the failed login accounts) it still failed.
Rebuilt the email accounts list and 11 of the 15 still ok but the same 4 failed to login again?
I can log into the failed Gmail's manually without any problems, this is so frustrating

A fantastic tool when working, saves me hours everyday

  28. I use this tool for many months with no problems on 3 gmail accounts. Some days ago 1 of my gmail accounts would not login (Failed to access). I do the same as TJ posted on Tuesday, but I cant look into the failed account. I can also log into the failed Gmail's manually without any problems.

  29. I have many Gmail accounts and now only 6 are logging in using Gmail checker (and FF6.0). All the others get a 'Failed to access' notification.

I have tried delting some of the accounts, exiting FF, restarting FF and then adding them back, without success. I looked for the file 'gmailchecker.sqlite' to delete it, but it doesn't seem to exist any more in FF Profiles. Uninstalling and reinstalling the addon doesn't work, as the uninstall doesn't remove the original details file.

Looking at the debug file, there appears to be an issue with cookies, so I cleared all the browser cookies and cache - but no change doing that either...

It's a great addon. Any help would be much appreciated.

  32. Thanks NT, I have had the multiple logins feature enabled on all my Gmail accounts for some time. Gmail checker seems to work fine on my old laptop using Win98 and FF5, but not now on my desktop using Win7.

  36. Great addon, but...:
We need a "disable" option on the menue.

    Reason:
I'm often faced with sudden multiple popups telling me that I'm logged out of one or more accounts, asking for passwords while I'm doing something else. This is obviously not supposed to happen, and is more than annoying.

I'd at least like an option to turn it all off without closing the browser.

  37. Hello NT, enabling Gmail multiple logins doesn´t help. What can we do now?
by frantab on Sunday, 7 August 2011, 09:13 am #
  38. For the last month or two I've had to login to Gmail checker every time I open Gmail. I have clicked the 'Remember login cookies' but still have the problem. I updated to the current version, 2.5.0.90 but still have the problem. I ran the debugger and have that saved but not sure that you want me to post it here in the comments. Is this a known issue? Is there anything I can check into to see why this is happening? Thanks for the help and I wouldn't bother to write if I didn't think this was a great add-on.

  39. I have tried everything that i can think of and still only half of my 15 accounts will login, this has included a new install of firefox and Gmail checker.....but today i tried to add a completely new gmail account and it logged in with the other 8 working accounts with no problem, the other same 7 accounts still wont login even if i re-enter all the info manually thro gmail checker...i can manually log into every account if I personally do it one by one (no add on)
It looks like some date is being stored by firefox and blocking the access into gmail?

But I am no expert, any help would be fantastic as really the add on is more frustrating now than any help
    Best regards

  40. I deleted all my accounts one by one, then uninstalled Gmail checker. Reinstalled it and added back all the accounts. And at last they all work now (except two that are domains hosted by gmail).
