GmailChecker problem

Sunday, 30 March 2014

Thanks everyone for your reports on the problem with GmailChecker. I'm looking into it at the moment. Will update once I've confirmed the cause.

Update 25/5/2014:

Okay, first, for anyone who sent me the bug reports, thank you. I do look through them.

Second, for anyone who 'demands' a fix, have a look at yourself and learn to behave in public. I do not owe you anything. The extension is a personal project that I do in my spare time which I really lack now. If it suits your needs, great. If not, sorry then. The more you demand me to do anything, the less likely I do it.

I've been extremely busy with my daily work. I guess you've been as well. So a little consideration wouldn't hurt, would it?

  1. thanks, now it's working again!
now I'm intrigued by it, there's no extension update but it's working, yesterday your site was down and so did the extension, does this mean the extension need to access your site to get it to work?

  2. That's weird.

In my office it is still not working, but at home it has never failed to work. At least that I have noticed since I don't use my home PC daily.

  3. I have similar (or the same) problem. Log-in fails on my computer at office, and is successful at one at home. Both computer runs same version of Ubuntu (Linux) with same version of Firefox (of course, same version of GmailChecker). I am pleased to help solving the problem by sending my log.

  4. FYI: If he hasn't updated the extension then whatever is happening on your end is between Gmail and v2.6.3 of the extension. An update with no download is simply not possible.

  6. For what it's worth, the extension was working in v27 just fine, but when Firefox upgraded to v28 on Sunday, that's when it stopped working.

  7. That isn't correct Daggertrout. Reports of it not working have been flooding in since March 25th, five days prior to the Firefox upgrade on Sunday. You can verify this in the previous new post comments on this website.

  8. Yep, I got similar experiences. It works fine on my work's network but not at home. They're different ISPs, of course. I'm still investogating.

  9. was working for a few days and just went down at around 5:20PM. Firefox froze and when it restarted, it kept asking for login info. This had been happening a lot after the FF28 update.

  10. @Marques I didn't have any problems with it until Sunday.

Also, it's still working fine on my laptop running Firefox 21.0 with Gmail checker 2.6.1

  11. I'm running FF 26.0. Gmail Checker stopped working last week. However, I decided to remove the latest version and install v2.6.1 and it's working. I wish I'd done it sooner.

You don't fully realize the value of something until you can no longer use it. Thank you Trinh for this useful add-on. I can't live without it.

@Marques, yes mine reverted to the newest version as well because of MY ADD-ON SETTINGS to AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE to the latest version.

then do the 2.6.2 DOWNGRADE again and there it is, WE HAVE WORKING GMAIL CHECKER AGAIN!!!

  84. Thanks for the suggestion, everyone. Going back to 2.6.2 fixes my regular accounts, but the ones with 2-step verification still do not work :(

When I logged into my account manually, I noticed that Google started asking for phone # verification. Wonder if this affected the behavior of GMail Checker itself.

Hope the developer has time to fix this. I really like and depend on GMail Checker. Thanks!

  85. As is mentioned elsewhere, GMail Checker WILL function correctly IF version is at 2.6.2 ...AND then do the following: go to Firefox "Add-ons Manager", click on the "gear" icon and ensure that "check for updates" is NOT selected / ticked.

  89. Stopped working for me yesterday (25th April) - nothing updated recently. Will try the rollback tip.

I wonder whether it is something at Gmail's end. I tried logging in to each account manually but Gmail no longer allows me to. Logging out as one address used to bring up the log in box where you could enter a different email address and PW, but now it goes back to the login it just used and the only option is to *add* another account to that one, i.e. to link them all together under one main account.

Looked online and found a tech website suggesting that the only way to stop Gmail doing this is to use different browsers for each Gmail account! Not feasible if you have more Gmail identities than browsers.

  92. FF29 and Gmail Checker 2.6.2 works fine only for Gmail not for Google Apps.

  93. Same thing for FF28
FF28 and Gmail Checker 2.6.2 works fine only for Gmail not for Google Apps.

  94. It's over a month since the problem was first reported. It's time for an update to be made. Is there an update in the works or not?
    by Jake on Thursday, 1 May 2014, 07:33 p.m. #
  95. I agree its been over a month. I gave up waiting and switched to Gmail Notifier (restartless) you can get it here:

    by star on Thursday, 1 May 2014, 09:17 p.m. #
  96. I installed Gmail Notifier yesterday and uninstalled it yesterday. It stopped integrating additional accounts after successfully adding 4 accounts.

So, I removed Gmail Checker completely, restarted Firefox then added GmailChecker 2.62 again and added the new accounts. It's working well now.

I hope this is updated because this is a temporary solution. I haven't upgraded FF yet but it might not work later so I will go with Gmail Notifier if it doesn't.

This was a great little app that is now EXTREMELY FRUSTRATING.

Since you REFUSE to fix this can you at least tweak it so it will NOT auto-update if we close our browser please? That way we can install an older version that works and it won't automatically update to the newer version that does NOT work. And yes, I did check the settings so it won't auto update but it reverts to "Default" which does auto update.

  98. That's strange Steve. I restart my browser at least twenty times a day and this never happens with add-ons for me.
    by Jake on Sunday, 4 May 2014, 01:59 a.m. #
  99. This is strange. My work PC started failing a couple of weeks ago. If I remember correctly after I restarted following some windows updates.
My home PC running 7 x64 and where I use waterfox 28 had no issues until today - following me installing some windows updates.....
Latest one installed is KB2952664 so I shall uninstall it and restart again and see what happens....

  101. This used to work so well... I hope it will be fixed; the @gmail accounts are working allright with 2.62 but I also have a couple of adress with my own domain (with GoogleApps).

In the meantime I am using "Checker Plus for Gmail", works great but it is only available on Chrome

  103. Having the same problem, W7 Ultimate x64, FF v29.0.1 (but now working since v28), I really hope you can fix this, I'm using this plugin since a long time, I'm very used to it, i hope i don't need to get another, thanks and great work!

  104. Had same issue with 2.6.3 starting about 10 days ago. Went back to previous version of Gmail checker 2.6.2 and it works fine. I tried 2.6.3 again several time but doesn't work. The Firefox version didn't seem to change anything for me, I had 28 and now 29 (in both cases, 2.6.3 wouldn't work anymore...)

  109. This Project is stopped and will not developed any more. Please use other extensions. Sorry for inconvenience.
    by Tobias on Sunday, 18 May 2014, 09:45 a.m. #
  110. Tobias, who said?? where is the developer? why he does not say that project is stopped??
    by elusive on Sunday, 18 May 2014, 09:57 a.m. #
  111. Tobias, your name isn't Trinh Nguyen, the developer. I see nothing here or on the official add-on page that states the developer has discontinued this add-on including in the comments section.

Trinh, it's very unfortunate you're not addressing this since it's two months since the problem arose.

Fortunately, the downgrade option works to a point. There are other alternatives for multiple gmail accounts.
    by Jake on Tuesday, 20 May 2014, 09:31 p.m. #
  112. I am tired of waiting for a solution since a downgrade does not really work for me and the current version does not progress in any way. Is there someone who is able to tell me some good alternatives ?

to make matters worse this is compounded by a feeling of depression stemming from the lack of understanding of

  123. Using 2.6.2 and everything has been working fine. Now today on all my accounts Gmail states
it is having authentications problems a ask that I log in. Well using Gmail checker I see my mail and I am login but I just keep getting this stupid banner from Gmail at the top of the mail page. I am beginning to think Gmail does not want people using third party gmail programs. I am just as sure Trinh will eventually get this problem solved. I have been using his extension for years and it is still the best one for me and my 52 gmail accounts.

  127. bobo -- The day I posted my comment,it was on Trinh's website. All someone had to do was go on their own add-ons page in Firefox,go to the Gmail checker,& hit "more",to find his website. It doesn't take a rocket scientist,to figure that out.I never claimed to be smarter than anyone.I actually just posted the link,so the lazy whiners & even the nice commenters could access it.If you took the time,to see all of the people complaining about their "entitlement" to get quick service for a free app;you would have understood why I made my original comment....but apparently you didn't.

  140. Please refund all the money that Amaltea spent on this software(what;they didn't actually spend money, because it's a free extension). Then you could get rid of them forever. It's rude people like this, who have this sense of entitlement, that have caused Trinh to actually walk away from this project,& remove it from Mozilla's add-ons.Here is some advice to you Amaltea;get a life & grow up;you whiny little cry-baby!!
    by dizzeedudlee on Tuesday, 24 June 2014, 04:29 p.m. #
  141. I agree with the above. ZIP IT Amaltea! It is assholes like you that expect free software to work like commercial software. If you don't like it then develop your own software! I for one am grateful that Trinh made this nice plugin. Blame Gmail if you want as they are the ones making the problems for this plugin NOT the author. Why don't you go to your Facebook page and then you can whine all you want. This page is for people who are trying to help Trinh figure out what is wrong. The last thing we need here is whining newbies! Please get yourself a life....

  144. Sigh. Won't you people ever realise that responding angrily to trolls is exactly what they want? The only way to get back at them is to ignore them. i.e. Continue as if they never said anything - Don't ever, ever respond.
Nobody likes to be ignored, especially trolls. It's the best human pesticide the internet has to offer..!
